Planning a new kitchen involves much more than choosing a door colour. The best results come from making decisions in the right order: layout first, storage second and appearance after the practical details have been resolved.
Measure the walls, ceiling height, doors, windows, radiators and existing service positions. Note anything that cannot easily be moved. A professional site survey will confirm the final dimensions, but an early sketch helps identify the possibilities.
Think about how many people use the kitchen and how the room needs to work. Do you cook most days? Do you need space for children, entertaining or working from home? Is the current kitchen short of worktop space or difficult to move around?
Separate your requirements into essentials and preferences. Essentials might include a tall fridge, accessible oven, dishwasher and extra pan drawers. Preferences could include an island, boiling-water tap or display cabinet.
Allow for the complete project rather than cabinetry alone. Your budget may also need to cover appliances, worktops, sinks, taps, lighting, flooring, plumbing, electrical work, decorating and waste removal.
A 3D CAD design allows you to inspect the proposed kitchen from several angles. Check that doors and drawers open without clashes, appliances have enough clearance and frequently used items are close to the relevant work area.
Do not fill every wall automatically. A slightly simpler layout with comfortable circulation can work better than squeezing in another cabinet.
